Save the Last One: Season 2 Episode 3

Running out of options and time, Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) tells Lori (Sarah Wayne Callis) and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) that he will have to perform the surgery without waiting for Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal) and Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince) to return with the equipment.

Meanwhile, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Andrea (Laurie Holden) attempt to search the woods for Sophia Peletier (Madison Lintz), after Daryl is kept awake by the crying of Sophia's mother, Carol (Melissa McBride). Daryl opens up about his childhood to Andrea, whilst still showing faith that Sophia will be found alive. They return to an abandoned campsite and find an undead camper hanging from a tree. Daryl decides to leave the zombie to its fate, but Andrea is against it. Noticing Andrea's hesitation, Daryl asks her if she still wants to live, but Andrea admits she still doesn't know. After hearing her answer, Daryl euthanizes the zombie before the pair return to camp. The pair return to camp without Sophia, and Dale Horvath (Jeffrey DeMunn) attempts to reconcile with Andrea, giving back her handgun.

Glenn (Steven Yeun) and T-Dog (IronE Singleton) go to the Greene home, where Glenn makes a first attempt to pray for the well-being of the survivors while T-Dog gets medical treatment using Merle Dixon's antibiotics, narrowly averting blood poisoning. Concurrently, Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) regains consciousness temporarily, saying brief sentences about his encounter with the deer before suffering from a seizure. Lori openly admits to Rick about wanting to end Carl's suffering, while Rick tries to hold on to the hope that Carl can see a better future.

Meanwhile, Shane and Otis are struggling to exit the high school, agreeing to split up and regroup elsewhere on the campus. Shane injures his leg when trying to exit through a second-floor window until he is saved by Otis. Each down to their last round of ammunition, and left with no other choice, Shane sacrifices Otis so he could limp back to the car with the medical supplies. Shane's return narrowly averts the surgery, when Rick and Lori had agreed to do the preemptive procedure. While Hershel performs the surgery with the acquired equipment, Shane fabricates a story about Otis sacrificing himself to save Shane. However, looking at himself in the mirror, Shane shaves his head with an electrical razor to hide evidence that he was in a fight with Otis.
